Number 1 has started a new section in school on learning to tell time. I think this is awesome because when he asks when we are going to leave or when something is on tv I tell him and he looks at the clock and is like, ok thanks. No longer does he ask, when is that? or how long is that going to take? He just looks at the clock smiles and says ok. AWESOME!!! However...
Bedtime...He knows he goes to bed at 8 o'clock. He doesn't, however, realize the time involved to get himself ready for bed. Brushing his teeth, going to the bathroom, getting a drink of water, cleaning the toilet, scrubbing the floors...oh, uhm, where was I...
Anyway, we tell him it's time for bed and the first thing he does is look at the clock. "It's not 8, it's only 7:53!" Grrrrrr, when I'm done gritting my teeth and focussing on how to be nice again you will be up the stairs and brushing your teeth.
He really enjoys being able to stay up late on Friday nights and most weeks outlasts me and the missus. We tell him he has to go to bed because we are going to bed(his eyes are usually halfway to the back of his head anyway so it's really not much of a struggle).
On Tuesday night he was telling me while laying in bed that he can't wait until he's a grown up and can stay up late. I look at him tell him "No you don't. Because then you have to deal with whiny little kids that won't go to sleep" I smiled kissed him on the forehead and turned out the lights. As I shut the door behind me I hear"I like whiny little kids"
I'm supposed to be the only smartass in this house @$&^((#^@$!
Happy Fatherhood Friday!

LOL, great post, my son can't tell time yet but I hear alot of the "When I grow up" stuff from him. I tell him not to rush things and enjoy being a kid while he can. Happy FF.
Check out my FF post at http://www.pbandsmellysdad.com/2009/04/temper-tantrum.html
Great post! Reminds me of when I was a babysitter as a teen. I had a kid who totally knew the time, and he was ALSO a brat. One night I moved the clocks to get him to bed early. (I know, evil.) :)
This made me smile..Love his last comment as you were making your exit.
Hearing these kind of stories makes me so excited about what's in store.
One up him and make bedtime 7:30!
@Rob-Just wait, the reasons for wanting to grow up get better and better
@Melisa-unfortunately I can't adjust the time on the DVR
@Andrew's Daddies-you're excited now, but just wait LOL
@WeaselMomma-I actually mentioned that last night!
Yikes, I better watch myself. If my son turns out to be anything like me with the sarcasm I'm in big trouble.
Our five year old already uses sarcasm. We are in SO much trouble when she really grows up.
My wife and I are both smart asses so I am sure my little girl will pick it up.
Hilarious!
I have to say, that the wisecracks (which are sure to come since I and my wife are both regular stand-up comics) are the thing I'm most looking forward to from kiddo. Great Fatherhood Friday post!
Great story. I always wonder when they will stop teaching kids how to tell time in school. There are so few clocks that require ciphering anymore. Everything is digital. Most people I know use their phone instead of wearing a watch.
uggghhhhhh! i hate the clock. I remember when my little guys were real little, i would put them in time out and say 5minutes. Sometimes, i let them stay in their rooms a few mintues longer because they seemed content staying in there, and who was I to tell them it was over. But once they started with the time, they would watch the minute hand and then say "can ii come out now?" The CLOCK is our ENEMY.
I love the comment from your son at night. It only gets better, they pick up everything we say.
here is where the clock works though.
7:45 to start the routine for bedtime, watch the clock, everything needs to get done in 15 minutes, can you beat the clock? da da.....1,2,3 GO!!!!!!!!!!
youll be surprised how quickly they get in bed.
OK now THIS is funny...I can't wait to have those moments...or can I? LOL
Kinda makes you want the school to wait on teaching them time until they are a little older.
I've gotten the "but it's not 8 o'clock" whine as well. :)
Very funny. Nice twist at the end. Kids think being an adult is so great they just don't see all the other stuff that goes with it. Happy blogging.
